Hatch Box Design

So I'm going build a hatch platform to level with the folded down rear seats so my dogs' bed doesn't sink into the actual trunk. I'm capable of putting together a simple platform to keep it level, but I'd like to put a little more thought into it than that with a hinged top, possibly with some type of organizer underneath. Has anyone still active built a box in the back and can give any tips? Any problems potential headaches?

Doesn't seem like anybody has any advice or prior experience, though... Bummer.

I'm thinking I'm going to over build this like crazy because I'll be attaching posts to the bottom to attach a net. My dogs like to lean up against the hatch and if it unexpectedly opens when I'm driving 70 down the highway I will be none to happy. Net will go from bottom of box to the mounting point to the seats or for the parcel shelf. That's my main goal with this.

Not a box but ...

The cargo board I built for my 2002 MCS:

A couple of approaches can be found here.

Due to living situation, I can't handle a massive board around every time I need to lift the back seats up. Post #2 makes it look so simple. I'll be doing something just like that with a hinged lid most likely.

Yes they are.

Here's a picture of the underside of the cargo board ..

There are two sets of dowel pins that straddle the tie-downs in the seat backs which keep the board from moving. One end of the board has little legs which rest on the sill for the back hatch. No box required
