2006 R50 Buyer Questions

I'm looking at a really clean R50 with 118k miles and the power steering literally went out today. The car is very clean outside of the headliner needing a little attention and a spot on the bumper. The seller has committed to getting it fixed, but curious as to the difficulty of the repair. It looks like the pump and fan are about $550 and a couple of hours for the repair, is that right?

Also, a mystery that may be a sign of an issue. It looks like someone shoved a dishcloth behind the brake booster. Any reason to do that, it was clean and dry, so doesn't appear to be to catch fluid.

There are three power steering hoses, two from the filler reservoir to the pump area/driver side wheel and then one on the rack. I am thinking the pump and hoses are at your price but that does not include labor.

The dishwash rag is odd.

Stick or Auto?

I wasn't counting labor, thinking about doing it myself and using it to negotiate. I trust my wrench over the random shop they may take it to.

It's a manual. Limiting the search to R53 with the 6speed and 05-06 R50 with the Gertrag. The car will be initially for my daughter's first car then come back to me for my toy to replace the E30 I just sold to make room for a car for her.

Modmini has a Youtube video on changing the power steering pump. The hose to the driver side wheel is a bear unless you have a car lift. You need an articulating extension to get to the nut that holds the hose on.

There is a thread here on the pump and hoses, I will see if I can find it.

The pump is electric with a large 100 amp fuse. This is fuse FL4 that you access after turning over the engine bay fuse box. You also need to check that the PS Fan is working as if it burns out, the pump will overheat and shutdown as well.
