A ship will not leave port without a name. It is very bad luck. Is that so wrong?

 

I think the only fair thing to do is register your car names at some central location. To rename a car should be a difficult task, because afterall if the name MEANS anything, it should not be frivolously discarded whenever the owner wishes. To rename a ship. or house, or any of the examples you gave requires a legal document and filing with an appropriate agency. Try to change the VIN number on your car and see how far you get. A ship's name is a legal identifier on bills of lading and other documents. A home's name is on a registered plat or real estate map. Even my dog's name is registered with the Amrican Kennel Club. Car names are nonsense, and trying to attribute some importance to it just compounds the indignity of it all. You can name your car, or your steering wheel, or brake pedal or whatever, but do not expect rational people to take it seriously. Like middle aged women with lap dogs they treat like children, people will respectfully smile and go home and laugh at the idiocy of it all.

I read and contribute to multiple car related forums. Cars like the Honda Element and Capri have very useful boards where technical and useful advice is offered and exchanged. No car names. The VW New Beetle boards started off that way, but were soon taken over by nutty alien-toting, Herby naming, too cute to live people. I am hoping against hope that the Mini board is not heading in that direction. I do not want to hear about the new doilies Pooky is wearing on her back seat today. Is that so horrible? You want the Mini to get a reputation as a "chick car?" Just keep this nonsense up. It will be Miata time soon.

 

Just wondering... If I ever thought about naming my MINI, and use "Silver Dart" as the name would I have to get permission from Herby? I guess not because Herby hasn't "legally" named his car.

Seriously, nobody forced you to read this thread. The title "Name Change" should have clearly indicated that this wasn't going to be a technical related thread. If that's all you're interested in, you should have passed it by.

I've seen you bash people before for naming their cars. If you don't like it, fine. Ever heard the expression, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all?"

Good point on the registering names thing, Joe. But I really think people who name their cars approach it with a dash of humor and good will. And I don't think that they would be too upset if a more "rational" person didn't take it seriously and insisted on refering to the car as "MINI" and not "Sweetie Sugar Plums." Anyone who does insist on other people calling the car its given name should be committed. I'm with you on that.

I can think of only a few other inanimate objects that provide so much joy and creates so much fun that naming seems appropriate. (I won't list the other items in the interest of keeping this forum PG-13 ) Even though it is just a car, the MINI almost seems to have a personality, so I can certainly understand someone's desire in naming it.

A little off the thread topic: And, the MINI's going to become a chick car? Oh, the horror! Maybe I'm biased (since I am, indeed a chick) but I really don't see that as necessarily a bad thing. Cars (or other objects) that have style and good looks always seem to be labeled as "chick-leaning". Should MINI change the style of the car and make it look more like a Ford F-150 and make it uglier, and thus, more masculine?

 

If you want technical information read the tech forum. If you want to hear about name changes, read posts about name changes. If you want to drive a Miata, buy a Miata. Its all good.

I did express my displeasure when it happened again because I don't want to, nor should I have to be exposed to such nonsense. Either communicate in a civil manner, or not at all. By the way......it would really be to your advantage to stop posting here because each time you do......you insult someone new and you're sliding further and further behind. I will begin by saying that I am not the car naming type, I did once and it didn't go well. Nobody here is getting all weird cutesy or anything, Herby just wanted to chat.

Quite frankly, If you are not interested don't read it. If you should stumble upon it and suddunly you realize it is something you are not interested in, stop reading and go on to something else, please don't insult kind people who are trying to have some fun.

This is not Joe's private forum. Others should feel welcome to discuss whatever they desire and not fear the wrath of Joe the BS slayer. Yes, to me discussing a cars name is not how I would generally spend my time, but hey, to each their own.

It is not like me to say such things or even waste the energy on comment to someone as negative and rude as yourself, but I am quite tired of watching you bash others who have done nothing to you.

I am naming my mini "Paddy" (kind of appropriate don't ya think since it is an MC40) . This is not a dig at anyone, just thought it was kind of neat to name it. Disclaimer: I will not require anybody to refer to my car by her given name.

Sir, the above named name was currently registered to myself as the name dubbed upon my toilet brush. Please find another proper name for your ice cube trays.

I think I'll change my NAM screen name to "JoePlumber".

My MCS has a name, BLU MENE. It’s a registered legal name and is displayed on my MCS. That central location you speak of is the nearest DMV in your state.

I've named my cars.... don't know a lot of people who do.... until I found MINI owners! That's one thing I thought was great... people like me! It seems that MINI owners/lovers are such a great bunch of people and are (typically) accepting of others... and the whole personalization "thing" that seems to come with MINI owning (much more so than most other cars) is another draw for me... it's fun thing for those who go for that sort of thing and I, too, don't see how it harms anyone else... most of my friends and co-workers think it's neat that I name my cars... even the ones who don't quite get it or do it themselves.
I think it's enough to say, "gee, I don't get it" and leave it at that. I'm enjoying some of the threads shooting back and forth, but I admit I really don't like it when people go into what feels like "attack" mode.
As for answering the original question of the thread...no I never found a reason to change the name of any of my cars. My first car, '78 Mustang II - Sheldon; my 2nd car an '86 Dodge Charger - Rudy; my current car a '92 Geo Storm - Siefert. In case anyone was curious.
And I really hope sometime fairly soon to put down a MINI Cooper.... no idea what name yet though.
