R50/53 Long trip, little car...
Traveling at night, you are probably correct. 95 sucks in the daytime in CT (Bridgeport, New Haven areas), NY (all areas), NJ (at the end of the toll road), DC, Richmond. 95 is also tolled at various points from NY-MD.
81 is usually a clean shot - and as an added bonus, no tolls!
Going North, you can avoid all tolls except 1, but it's like $1.50 - on I-84 East crossing the Hudson River in Newburgh, NY. Westbound I-78 has a toll as well, but it's also small.

Yes, they are - hence I-81.
FYI, With little to no traffic, I can usually do MD-RI/MA in about 8-9 hours on 95. Using I-81 / I-84, I can do the same within an additional hour at any time of the day (and spend less money and it's less stress).

Very cool about your trip. I'm in western MD and I prefer 81 to 95 any day of the year! Not far from me is the The Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive - VERY cool things to see. Luray and Skyline Caverns are also nice if you have the time.
I do a MD/MA or MD/NC trip often and the vehicle varies - usually depending on what's being packed. North and South, 81 is my preferred route.
