Are all Minis 50 state legal? Is there a specific version only for Calif?

I'm pretty sure if you buy a car, it covers California emissions. I went there w/a 98 Altima and I didn't have to worry about it or anything since it was a newer than "xx" year...but then again, I'm not sure. I think the cars they SELL in Cali have different requirements, but you can bring a car in from another state just fine...

 

I'm in Colorado, but am on a waiting list in CA for my MINI. I was concerned that the MINI's in CA might be different than those that go to dealers in the rest of the country, so I checked with the CA dealer and the response I got was:

"All BMW Group cars (including our MINI) meet the strictest emission standards in the world. So the ones that go to CO are the same as the ones that come here."

What should a California resident look for when buying a new vehicle from another state?

Individuals are prohibited from importing, purchasing, or leasing a new vehicle from another state, unless the vehicle was manufactured for sale in California, and the Environmental Protection Agency label certifies the vehicle has California smog equipment. California considers a new vehicle to be any vehicle with less than 7,500 miles on the odometer at the time of purchase.
