R50/53 not so good MPG

. Mpg is different between the US & the UK - (1US gallon = 1.2009 UK gallons).
As for fuel ecconomy my experience (hwy) with the occasional pass & hard on ramp accelleration is a real world 30.57mpg. Mixed driving I average about 24-26mpg. But every now and then I can't keep my foot out of it & then I don't even want to know the milage.
You sure Sid? My car's pretty heavily modified 220hp or so & I do alright - 30mpg or better at an average 75mph.

15% pulley & ECU at 3000 miles, other mods since. Milage has improved from when new. As others mention its all how you drive it. BTW milage is with 17" S-lites & Dunlop SP9000 DSST rubber (33PSI all around) - not exactly the lightest combo.EDIT:
I do have the full factory aero kit, but I find it hard to belive that its saving me gas
I've got the same rubber but only have a cai. I looking at plugs and a pulley and maybe a ecu in the near feature. I drive it kinda slow although I have been redlining it in third gear while pulling on to freeways. It pulls kinda nice when I do that.
I think my gas mileage is close to the worst. Mostly suburban driving, I get
20.4 mpgon the computer.......18.7 mpg when I do the math.......at an average speed of 22.6 mph.......collected these figures over 3,100 miles of driving.
I have a CAI and a 15% pulley. The thing is......this car is so much fun.......I don't really care!
I keep the tires at 33-34 psi.

Finally I got pass my broken-in period .. 1650miles on my odometer. I drove up to Vancouver BC over the weekend and manage to get 25.2MPG (manual calculated). I drove at 6th gear around 85% = 75mph, 15% beween 75-100mph.
Here are some of my gas mileage stats to date:
First fill-up 06/12/04
Last fill-up 09/20/04
Total gas to date 251.378 gallons
26 visits to the gas station averaging 9.668 gallons a visit.
Least gas put in 1.159 gallons (washed the car)
Most gas put in 12.368 gallons
Total miles at last fill-up 09/20/04 6931 miles
(and second oil and filter change)
6931/251.378 = 27.572 miles per gallon.
(nearly 50/50 city and highway driving)

I moved from a 325i to my current 04 MCS. The MCS is not much more fuel efficient than the 325i. For city driving, the MCS burns less gas, but on the highway, especially at higher speeds, the MCS doesn't do so well. It must be because the MCS has the aerodynamics of a brick.
I recall edmunds had long-term tests of both a 330i and a MCS. Over something like 15,000 miles, the 330i had a better overall gas mileage than the MCS.
Think of it this way: The MCS is 2800lbs with most of the options. (I recall someone weighed their MCS and the weight was around 2800lbs). The 3 series is about 3200lbs empty. The difference is two large-size adults. Since it takes about the same amount of energy to move both cars up to speed, and since the MCS has worse aerodynamics at high speed than the 3 series, it is no surprise to me that their are also similar in terms of gas mileage.

I think it's a combination of things..the aerodynamics only explain part of the reason that the mileage is different. How about the tires that the MC uses..assuming that the narrower stock tires are being used? There must be other factors..engine under boost...maybe an engine with more torque that relied less on boost to maintain speed?
With about 6,500 on my 03 MC I hadn't even bothered to check mileage until recently, just assuming it was good. OK, truth be told I finally discovered the button on the turn signal that made it easy given my being math challenged.
I was really disheartened to find I was getting between 32-33 each time checked. At first I just concluded the wind was blowing a bit hard the wrong way. But it seems consistently there on road and around 30 with some in-town thrown in. Haven't checked just in-town since mine wants to head straight to a higher speed limit.
Anway, I feel better after reading this thread. Here's another that really didn't buy it for super high gas mileage and the fun quotiant really offsets not get 5 -6 miles more per gallon.

Update
Manually checked my mileage and compared it to the OBC's readout.
OBC was 36.7 mpg over 212 miles.
Manual checked at 36.6 mpg.
Quite an accurate reading from my perspective. I will continue to reset and report back.
Prior to getting new wheels and tires my mpg was consistently 30-32 mpg according to the OBC.
And yes, at times, I do drive her quite hard, revving to redline and strectching her legs. The mileage above was obviously mainly highway miles.

Flash to today. I was driving two lane hilly country in Wisconsin. I wasn't even caring about testing mileage, so was doing lots of revving while putting her through some paces. Each time I checked mileage I was getting around 37-38 mph. So, what's with that?
Maybe it is just that they suffer Tina Turner syndrome and don't like to do anything nice and easy. More seriously, anyone have a clue why mileage would be so much better driving like someone not looking for good mileage? My tires are always at 34 psi. so that's not it. cooler weather? I'm really fishing to figure this one out.

On a trip back from Minneapolis on straight not heavily traveled four lane I tried to go easy on accellerating etc. cruising at around 75. I was really disappointed to only get just under 33 mph. Thinking maybe there was a headwind, I've tried several times since and it was about the same.

msfitoy--will resetting the ecu set you back to base line and essentially un-adapt it??
my car isn't running quite as quickly as usual and i'm going to try resetting the ecu in the am and run it a bit.
i'll repost if it helps.
BTW- i get 26mpg driving around town and around 30 on the highway at 80+ mph, AC on and 2 adults.
oh yeah--35 psi all around 17" S-not-so-lites and Dunlop runflats

Highway miles for me is 60-70 in 6th unless I'm passing someone or the road is clogged, then it's slower. I do run quite a bit in 6th, though, on the highway.
BTW, checked my mileage again today after filling up.
OBC said 35.6 for the 313.1 miles.
Manual was 29.98.
Many of the miles during this tank were in downtown Indy compared to my last tank of mainly 2 lane highway miles.
So much for my OBC being accurate.
Just going to keep checking every once in a while to see how it's doing.
