R50/53 MINI S loses power - Code P1688
MINI S loses power - Code P1688
So this happened yesterday on a feeder. I managed to get off the road. I was afraid the drive belt had failed. After sitting a while waiting for a friend to come help, I restarted the car and it drove fine, although I stayed at residential streets/speeds. Stopped at an autozone and had the computer checked and it said P1688.
So, friend took it apart and said there were no leaks, that the bypass valve may have been a bit sticky & he "unstuck" it & applied some lithium grease. Said the Crank Pulley & belt looked fine. Thinks there may have been some corrosion on one MAP sensor & cleaned it.
So, it drives fine for a while & then it happens again. I can turn it off & immediately restart it and it will be fine again. This is mostly at residential street speed, but we've even gotten the RPMs enough to kick in the supercharger & that didn't trigger limp mode.
How can we test the MAP sensors?
Extra clues:
When it drove fine, the AC was off. And the last three times it lost power, I had turned on the AC and it would happen about a minute later. And of course, the AC was on when it first occurred.
I think I smelled burning when it initially happened, but not certain. I haven't smelled it since.
Also, we heard this noise once when we first drove it after reassembling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68AH...ature=youtu.be But not again. Although it was the friend driving who drove the rpms way up before shifting. I've been the driver since.
The batt light came on, although I don't know if it came on every time. Its not on now.

I had this code. It happened a few hours into owning my car. Took it back to the dealer where I bought it from and they took it to MINI. Turned out to be a throttle body that they replaced. May want to look in that area for a leak.
Loss of power
P1688
Burning rubber smell
Battery light
All symptoms of a failed crank pulley.
If you haven't already set to finding the parts and tools you need to repair the car give us a call, we've got everything on hand and ready to ship.

Same thing happened to mine.
Failed crank pulley. Burning smell, battery light comes on and car goes into limp mode. It goes into limp mode once or a short but after AC is turned on due to you putting load to it. Get it replaced because once it goes you are going to shred everything your belt is attached to. I went with a Alta lightened 0% pulley because it eliminates the rubber that fails but I have read different opinions on this. There is a fluid filled one that they sell but it's very pricey.
