So I just recently purchased an R53(2006 Mini Cooper S)... Apparently there had been a leak in the sunroof that none had attempted to fix(It took me all of 6minutes with a screwdriver and some electrical tape...)
This of course led to all kinds of problems... Most of which were unknown to me at the time of purchase.
Here's the list:
Tach cluster out
Dash lights out
Brake switch????
The brake switch I am most lost on... It looks like someone cut out the connecter to the switch and jerryrigged a pressure plate to the pedal. I had figured the switch was bad, but until I disassembled the dash , I had no idea it was hacked out.
I read that the tach/dash light thing was common with moisture... However it was never mentioned what it actually takes to dry it out... 2" foam padding under the carpet, held a literal 3 gallons of water and spread it across the floor of the entire car...
So, I'm sitting in the back seat of my car, with most of the carpet cut out... Front seats removed shopvaccing the last of the water out...
Any advice on how to get my dash and tach working??
Check the BCM module at the passenger side footwell/door jamb that controls most of the cars electronics. If the sunroof drain was leaking at the front passenger side it's probably wet. Hopefully you can dry it out without damage because it's really expensive.
Do you have access to a dehumidifier that you can leave in the car after you vacuum most of the water out?
Bet the BCM is toast....
Pressure plate under the pedal to turn on the brake lights..ouch...look too see of they created an entire second wiring loom, tapping into the factory harness too....if so, you are gonna have to fix that too....if not...they got very creative with the wiring.
Pictures!!!
Gotta see this!
I dropped the driver side corner of the headliner. The rubber hose had somehow become detachet from the metal tube. I put a small hose clamp on it.
No dehumidifier, I actually pulled the entire carpet out, no easy task by the way.
I disconnected the ghetto rigged plate switch. But here is a picture of how it was wired.
