R50/53 A arm bushing replacement

A arm bushing replacement

I'm a reasonably competent mechanic. Need to replace the a arm bushing..I have the complete assm. I have a Bentley manual that makes the job "seem' pretty straight forward. I will remove the a arm..Bentley sez..special tools..needed? How is the bushing assm. removed from the a arm..straight forward? Any addl. "help" will be appreciated

There are a few ways to do this but it depends on what you got. By "complete assm" do you mean you got pre-pressed bushing in the carrier bracket? Poly or OEM?

I assuming that's pre-pressed like this. You need to lower the subframe and just swap out the brackets. Good tutorials here and here.

You can pull the outer ball joint 13mm bolts instead of popping the taper if you want to avoid using a ball-joint tool.

If you leave the arms on the subframe until it's lowered and you can pull the carrier and arm off together, then pull them apart on the bench. The special tool is for pulling and pushing the bushing to/from the hex shaft of the arm - it's not necessarily needed. A pry bar or heavy screwdriver works fine to get it off - it's rubbery and sticks so it takes a little work. You can use a press or hammer to get the new one on if you're careful.
