Key/fob damage

My 2004 key with built in fob is cracking. Small holes in lock and open spaces. I wanted to know if anyone had purchased the blank, sold on ebay and if just the face cover could be replaced. If that can't be done how much of an ordeal to put cut key and electronics into the blank? Thanks

Many places can cut the blanks...the machine is like a metal router...or dome have moved the shaft to the new key body...it's held in by a pin...a few good threads on it...
But for it to work, the ews chip...looks kinda like a grain of rice, that is in the key body, must be moved... Most move the electronics too (the keyless entry chip and battery are DIFFERENT than the ews chip).
Several threads on this, heck one guy even runs a small home bussiness doing it for folks that don't feel comfortable doing it. Just be sure the eBay blank you buy is the same style.
Some folks were using VALEO VW Flip keys, the shaft is the same from some years, and it can work if you do some modding. Do a search...a few good threads with photo's around.

Just open the 'Membership' section on the black bar at the top of the page, select V and scroll down. Easy peasy.

If I understand what you are asking the actual metal key is held in by a pin to the face part of the key. By the time you get everything off the face your better off just using both halves of the new key. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...rbishment.html

There is the link. Might as well replace the battery while you're in there too
