BMW looked on it with derision because it was designed by Chrysler and was acquired when they bought MINI. They didn't like it and said it had lousy fuel economy, which it kinda does. However, the newer Prince motor designed by Peugeot, has shown to have all sorts of issues. I would take the lump any day.

Here are a few posts with tons of info on the Tritec from a member who worked on the development of the engine with Chrysler and Rover/MINI.

And the term "lump" is a pretty traditional term for a motor in England.... Just like boot for trunk, bonnet for hood...
If you watch "Wheeler-dealers" on velocity network it can be funny at times.

Here are some other images of the motor. I think there might be a leak (based on the oil looking substance on the back of the motor).

This is the windshield washer bottle under the right fender. I think there's a leak - but I don't know if it's the bottle, the motor or the hose.

Good luck finding the leak. I have replaced the washer bottle, and the grommets that seal the pump and sender unit. Still when I refill the bottle to 1/2 inch from the top, after a couple of days the fluid level drops to where I can just see it in the curve of the neck of the bottle.

The Tritec has a cast iron block hence the nickname the "Lump".

My driver side seat has developed a crack. I guess this might be a spring time fix. Maybe I'll add heated seats.

Fini is in getting PowerFlex bushings installed and inner/outer ball joints replaced (Thanks Way - WMW). While in surgery, they found the oil pan gasket leaking and the boots on one of the axle's has cracked. Getting a reman OE axle for now.

As long as Fini stays in shape, the next items will be crank damper, front main seal, serpentine belt, spark plugs and coil.

Here he is - after getting PowerFlex bushings, (reman) left axle and oil pan gasket - and all cleaned up.

Hi MiniTigger,
I am sorry I am late to your party, but wanted to let you know, you have the best year Gen 1 Mini S out there and chrono pac is my only required option on my keeper Minis.
Strut braces are important, so don't wait too long before getting them!
Congrats on your buy!

Thanks for your post - the Chrono Pack is a requirement for me too! You should be able to see in the previous pics, I have the M7 strut braces and bar. That was actually my first mod.
