Dumb question -

Really dumb question that I'm almost embarrassed to post but...gonna do it anyway. Does the R53 have replaceable CV axles in the rear or just on the front with the FWD aspect of the car. Have a pretty constant whirring roar in the driver's side rear that sounds a CV axle needs to be replaced (at least that's what the sound has been on other vehicles I've owned and had that repaired on).

If one can replace that, is it a DIY type job? I've seen videos online for replacing the front axles but can't find anything on the rear. Thanks and no laffin' at that dumb question.

No, the MINI is front wheel drive.

Check wheel bearings for play, brakes for dragging, tires for awkward wear patterns.

You only need a CV joint when there's power being applied to a wheel. I also concur with nkfry that you should check the bearings and brakes.

Step away from the tools....
At least you asked - only fools go it alone when they have no idea. Very likely a wheel bearing - what's the mileage on the car? Replacing the front was easy - not the 45 minutes everyone says but maybe 1:15.

Rear should be pretty easy too

The Tardis has 110,000 on her. Tires are in great shape with no odd tread wear showing and no noticeable brake dragging.

110K miles would not be unusual to need a wheel bearing. Generally a wheel bearing won't cause uneven wear too much. Diagnosing them can be fairly easy - although mine didn't have any of the symptoms of play that you see in the videos but once out it made a very distinct Grinding.

Thanks for the guidance guys! Found a helpful tech article on Pelican Parts and will proceed with bearing replacement. Definitely the culprit for me.
