Reliability issues

I'm considering an R50 and have seen complaints online concerning reliability. The comments I saw were vague; I'd like some insight into what problems are common with the R50 so I won't be surprised.

Most complaints are about the transmissions. The CVT is awful from what I've read, while the 5 speed has a tendency to go kaput.

I don't know just how bad they are, but that's what people will write about.

Take a look at the motoring file buyers guide for the R50 and R53 HERE. Yes, Avoid the CVT transmission if you can. Lots of people have done the 5 speed midland swap to the Getrag 6-speed. Besides the motoring file guide, check out this thread here as well for some good insight although it's mostly geared towards the R53, there is still some relevant information.

If you do get an R50 , shoot for 05-06 model years with the manual. Its the 5 speed getrag and about the best transmission for the R50 era. Stay away for the CVT and midlands manual transmission ( 2002-2004).

Thanks and good luck.
