Broken Hood release cable

OK so a few weeks ago the plastic latch that you pull to open the hood broke when I pulled it. Since it is the middle of winter, I didn't really feel like dealing with it so I have just been opening my hood with a pair of pliers. Yesterday while changing my oil I was checking the rest of my fluid, I noticed my power steering fluid was low (this stuff is crazy expensive 25.00$ a qt). I went to open my hood today and it would not budge, the cable will not move at all, only the driver side will pop but not the passenger side. My question is, is there any way to open the hood without pulling the cable. I looked for a little while but I could not see any way to open the latch. Has anyone else had this issue? I was planning on replacing the cables any way once the weather gets a little better.

Remove the passenger front wheel and wheel liner, you'll have access to the hood latch on the passenger side.

Does anyone know where the binding is occurring? I thought it was happening at the hood latch. I put some 30 weight oil there and it seam to smooth out the operation a bit. I am just trying to avoid breaking a cable.

It binds at the cable and on the connection to the lock. The cables need oiled at the front, they point towards the front of the car and salt and dirt get into the cables, then rust , stick and split. When you get new ones oil them in the font cables a couple times a year.

There is a kit for the pre 6 / 2002 R50 R53

And 6/2002+ R50 R52 R53

Thanks

If you got some moisture in there, it could have frozen and bound up. The oil you used should help, and also reduce the chance of the cable rusting in the housing.
