How do you read the dipstick on the R53?

This seems like a silly question, but how do you read the ridiculous dipstick on the R53?

The fiberglass dipstick in my 2003 MCS doesn't appear to have any markings on it indicating oil level. There is a yellow plastic bit on the end that has some bumps on it, but nothing that shows full or empty.

The manual that came with the car has an illustration of the simple metal dipstick on the R50, and shows the location of the dipstick on the R53 - but doesn't show what my dipstick looks like, or where the markings are.

Long term, the solution is to buy an aftermarket metal dipstick. But until I do, how do I read the stock one?

Look at the yellow...
Bottom line to top markings is about 1quart...pretty simple...easy to read...
My craven is actually HARDER to read than the gen1 stock dipstick.......
Gen1 is easy to read according to most, but they break...sometimes on the shaft or where the yellow bottom part is bonded to the fiberglass stick....

Thanks for the quick reply, ZippNH.

I figured that the measurement was on the plastic yellow bit. There's just no obvious sign that the markings on it indicate anything. So I'll just assume that the top marking indicates full.

Not that I'll be using this dipstick for long. In trying to figure out how to read the dipstick, I read lots of threads about these fiberglass sticks breaking and the many joys of the struggle to remove the remaining bits. I have no interest in adding another such thread, so I just ordered an aftermarket metal dipstick.

- Place a paper towel in the palm of your hand.
- Take the dipstick carefully horizontally (parallel) to the towel and carefully place the dipstick on the towel (do not drag the dipstick yet)
- Press or roll the dipstick on the towel without moving the dipstick along its length and you'll be able to see where the oil was (if you're quick before the oil spreads on the towel)

As mentioned - 1L volume from top mark to bottom mark
Check your oil every 2nd fill up - it's not unheard of to have oil be consumed at a rate of 1L/1000kms

1 Quart, not 1 liter...

If you're using 1 liter per 1000 km you have a serious problem.

Yup, I did - leading to a new engine install (future viewers can check my thread history)

But the worst problem is that 1L/1000kms is not unheard of and is within Mini's spec (verified by phone with Mini corporate)

And FWIW, you'll never be able to see/read the 50ml difference between 1qt vs 1L on the dipstick.
