Wait... are we supposed to lock ourselves in our cars, then call each other, or break the window with the phone if we get stuck? i'm so confused....

Long ago I worked in a car stereo shop. I remember this was a BMW feature even before there was such a thing as remote locking.
Essentially, once you locked the car by using the key in the door lock you could not then unlatch a BMW door from the inside. It was an anti-theft measure probably intended to keep car thieves and radio snatchers from getting in and out of your car easily. They would have to climb in and out through the broken window which I'm guessing BMW thought thieves would not stoop so low to do. Yeah right! ;-) I'll bet using the key to lock someone in the Mini would leave them trapped as well. The Key FOB locking is just the modern day version of this same feature.
