steering angle install bentley manual?

hey all - can someone w/ a bentley manual pls post a pic of how they say to remove/install a steering angle sensor?

i saw another thread that says "remove the screw by the U joint" but looking at the sensor it seems like you have to take the steering column out to remove...

thanks in advance for the help!

-Matt

Remove the lower cover under the steering wheel and you'll see a pinch bolt that if I recall is 10mm. If you loosen this bolt the steering shaft will slide down and then you can remove the steering wheel angle sensor.

The lower cover is held on with two or three screws that are easily seen.

Item of note there's a spring washer between the steering shaft and the angle sensor so don't lose. There also could be a white plastic bushing in the end of the steering shaft, MINI calls it an adapter.

Don't forget to render the airbag system safe by disconnecting the battery etc.

thanks nicefeet!

i'm new to doing these kinds of things so apologize in advance for what may be dumb questions...

1) is there anything special i need to know about removing a "pinch bolt"

2) how do i remove the adapter?

3) glad you mentioned the battery thing... never thought to do that. what other "don't forget to..." type things do I need to be aware of?

4) would you mind if I pm you pics to make sure i'm loosening the right bolt? just waiting for the part to come in so prob won't be till next week

The nylon adapter is loose and white. Your car may or may not have it. I think there was a mid production change at some point.

The 10mm pinch bolt will be on the upper end of the steering shaft on. There's nothing special about removing it. There is some kind of thread locker on it.

IMO the biggest PITA is removing the lower piece of trim under the steering wheel . I thought everything else was easy. The only reason I say PITA is this is the **** that can and will break if you don't go slowly.

hey nicefeet. finally getting around to doing this. do you know if I will need to get a dealer to recode this or will it just work? the DSC and TPMS lights are on - which i've confirmed is being caused by a bad SAS. Once i reconnect the batter will those just go away? I read something somewhere about the computer needing to be reprogrammed to recognize the new SAS part...
