Gas cap and check engine lights are on.

Just bought a 2005 "S" W manual transmission. Has 84,000 miles on it.

The "Check engine Soon" and "Check gas Cap" lights are on, I'm hoping that a new gas cap will fix both. I'll be plugging my scanner in as soon as I get the car to see what codes I have. Is this a common issue? Would appreciate any suggestions on this.

I pick the car up tomorrow, I'll be back here with more feedback on the car once I get some miles on it.

Check that gas cap and the older style with the green color end is a turn and tightening till it feels tight, the newer design I believe is a turn and click more spring loaded it feels. The newest version has the black end, with a blue ring. Make sure the old one is sealed, if still a problem, replace it. Don't forget to re-hook the tether that comes with it.

Or, it could be the Delphi 1997278/ AC Delco 241-641 purge valve beside that leaky RH engine mount.

Or the vent valve minsanity mentioned could be upside down.

The electrical connection should be at the bottom, not the top per the following thread.

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...cap-light.html

I recently had some work done on my 2006 MCS that required removing the engine.

Got it back and the Check Gas Cap light came on after 5-10 miles of driving, before turning off again.

They had reinstalled the vent valve upside down when they put the engine back in.

Gas cap light and check engine light issues SOLVED

Hey guys, a newbie to the forum but a veteran knuckle buster on old iron muscle cars to the new ones today. Been there, done that lots of times. My wife's '04 Mini started the gas cap shuffle thing awhile back. After changing the gas cap with a dealer one (their suggestion...) I realized why I don't like service departments. The real issue is the fuel tank vent valve (purge valve) in the front of the engine behind the passenger headlight. This is a Delphi part that is used on nearly all fuel injected emission controlled vehicles and is really a standard cheap part ($17.99 from O'Reilly's) instead of the 149.99 the dealer wanted. The part number is right on the side under the Delphi logo (1997278 if I remember correctly) and interchanges with most of the distributor's numbers (B/W, Bosch, and others). In fact, the B/W part actually had the Delphi logo on it too with the same number, but was not listed like that in the catalog. After a free reset with a code reader, problem solved and it has not returned. Just a little help for those who need it!
