Power Steering Issue

I've been looking around, but can't find any answers for this. I have already replaced my power steering pump once and know the awful sound it makes when it is going bad (This was about 2 years/35000 miles ago). Today, out of nowhere, the power steering started cutting in and out on my way to work. There are no noises or other symptoms beside some squeaking that went away after the car warmed up, but i assumed that was the belt since it was slightly damp this morning in Milwaukee. Can the pump go bad and not make any noise? Was that squeaking noise actually the pump?

I assume it could just stop...could be short in the motor. Maybe a short in the electric connector to the pump or a wire issue.

The power steering pump is not belt driven -- its electric so belt slipping has nothing to do with it.

Power steering cutting in and out is almost always the power steering pump. They aren't the best and as many have been commenting MINI has been covering the cost of replacement -- but it takes AGES to get reimbursed and/or a replacement.

Good luck.
