I have a beautiful 2003 MCS, loaded that has 29K on her and I am wondering if
I should trade in or sell outright. I am going to order a new one so we can keep the miles down on the car. We put a lot of road miles on this as we had three drivers at the time. My son has since got his own, with low miles now of course, and I have the higher mileage Mini.
Has anyone had any experience on trading up model years??
Any good idea on value for resale??

New to the forum, Looks great!

It has to make more sense to sell it.
Dealer would only want to buy it to mark it up.
With gas prices going crazy, our 30+ MPG Mini's should be worth even more.

Oh, by the way, WELCOME to NAM.

Good Luck

you have to consider the differnence in sales tax too if you sell your MINI and buy a new one outright. Got to cover the difference at least.

I can't imagine that anyone would say it makes sense to trade. Given the MINI's high value (even a higher mileage one), you shouldn't have too hard a time selling it privately. Reducing hassle would be the ONLY reason why I'd argue for a trade-in vs. private sale...and I just don't think it'll be a hassle to sell your MINI.

Let's say your car is bluebook $15k
Dealer offers for trade in: $13k
Private offers: $16.5k
Let's say your next car is $20k

If traded-in: $20k - $13k = $7k
$7k + tax (0.07) = You owe $7,490 + misc.

If private: $20k - $16.5k = $3.5k
$3.5k + tax ($20k x 0.07) = $5,000 + misc.

You get $2,490 -misc. money for mods. but will need to
deal with potential customers which could take weeks before
a sale... Im more of a tax reduction recooperer type on a trade-in
due to my busy schedule, although, I sold my previous Prelude
privately. Took 2 months...

I am a trader....or a seller to CarMax....I just never want to deal with a stranger and don't want the hassle. So it costs me a little money...so it does....

At the very least I'd post it on one of the websites (e.g., autobytel, autotrader...). It is dirt cheap and easy. I sold a Volvo 850 wagon w/ standard transmission. It took 20 minutes for the buyer to respond to my ad and went for full asking price. Go figure.

and there is the heart of the matter: if you want to get the most money for your car and don't mind the hassle of dealing with strangers who will whine and haggle with you over this fault or that; then sell it out right. Otherwise, accept the fact that you are losing two to three thousand dollars on an effortless transaction wherein you'll never have to worry about some poor schmuck calling you back to tell you that you sold him this undisclosed problem or that...
