Noisy Supercharger

Hi all,

Back to NAM after a couple of years away, glad to see this community is still alive and strong !

I've got a question regarding my supercharger. I've got a 2004, with 140K miles. My SC is getting noisy, kind of tinny sounding. I brought my car in to repair a broken idler pully, and the mechanic, who I trust, said it sounded like the bearing was gone on the SC.

I'm still getting lots of power from the car, super responsive, smooth power delivery, just a bit noisy. Under normal driving, I can't even hear the noise. It's only when I'm outside the car that I can hear the tinny chatter.

So my question is, is there a fix that will get me a few more miles from the SC before a major rebuild/replacement. And a follow on, is there a decent DIY here on the site to help with the replacement?

Thanks in advance,
Erick

could be the gears starting to let go, or possibly just low oil, which would mean bad seals

Thanks

Thanks Gabriel.

That was the answer I was expecting, but not the one I was hoping for.

Oh well, it's only time and money .....

Yup...
Once the best bearings are going bad....its all over...
The tolerances for the parts are TINY, and the speeds high...
With 140,000 miles, I would 100% change the water pump at the same time...along with lots of other worn, tired bits....
Possible to diy a pump change... Would pre-order the parts, seals, gaskets, and have the remanufactured sc on hand (they are often done as exchanges to speed repair)...places that you ship YOUR sc out for repair will usually take a week or more...plus shipping....
Unless you a a dedicated diy'r with tools and a good place to work, having a shop do the 6-8 hours labour might be simpler....
Used rebuildble units can be bought for 200-500$ (Core), and usable used unit for slightly more depending upon how much wear/miles they have ( 500-800$ about...I bought one a few years ago...but have not needed it)....these units are getting hard to find as few low mile cars are getting wrecked.....

Did you talk your options over with Pete over at greasys garage?
If you are in mass, I would suggest you check with them if you have not already done so.
