OEM vs. aftermarket

I need to replace the front right side panel (or fender) on my Mini. The new OEM part is more than $200. I found one in a salvage yard for $75. However, I have also found an aftermarket panel for $50. Is there really a difference?

For what it's worth, the salvage part is the same color as the car at this time, but I am thinking about painting the entire car at a later date.

That depends...

Aftermarket parts are all over the map with respect to quality and fit. Unless you know what you're looking at, you might get a piece of crap. $200 actually sounds pretty good for a new OEM part. If that's too dear, I'd go with the used part - if it looks good inside and out.

My experience is that aftermarket body panels never ever ever fit right. Go with the junkyard part.

If you cannot find an good one in the junkyard ( not rusted or damaged ) , we have the Genuine MINI side panels right here. These will line up correctly.

It's true that the aftermarket parts don't usually fit as well as the OE, but sometimes the savings is worth it.
I actually have some of those quarter panels used from wrecked cars if you want to get one from us we sell them for $65, too bad I don't have one already indi blue for you.

Thanks for the replies. I picked up the salvage part today.

However the hood is another story for another day.
