increased engine sounds from engine compartment
I recently had control arms replaced in my 2004 Mini Cooper S. While driving home after the repair I noticed an increased in the sound level from the engine compartment and the sound of rushing air. I returned the car to the shop and after investigating found that a shield or skid plate that protects the oil pan and other components was missing. They agreed to order the part and install it. After two weeks I was informed that after conferring with the parts department of a Cincinnati dealership there is no shield listed for my VIN #. Does anyone have any information about this shield or what may be responsible for the increased sound levels from the engine compartment after the control arm repair.

More than likely they didn't disconnect the steering column from the steering rack when they did the job and the boot that seals the steering column in the firewall was knocked loose. This is a real pain to get back in place but can be done.

What he said!!! I did the bushings myself and took me a week and a cold night to figure out what was causing the noise and the cold air on my feet.
