R50/53 Car insurance
I have just found out that when renewing my car insurance with Auto club of So. Ca. that they are using the BMW M3 classification to rate it for insurance. The company says that when they do to the DMV and put in the vehicle ID number, it pulls it up as an M3, so that is how they are classifiying the insurance. Does anyone know about this or does my mini have the wrong vin #?
Please help.

That's kinda strange. I have insurance through Automobile Club of Wisconsin (basically the same company, just a different state) and my insurance is just $100 more a year than it was for my '97 Dodge Intrepid. You might want to verify that this is correct or shop around for better premiums.
BTW, Welcome to North Americam Motoring!

If it comes up as an M3 they did it wrong.
I will dig out my paper that tells (I'm old and don't remember exactally) what exactally the VIN gives in what order and I will post it here for you ASAP.
I do remember that the first letter is the country of origin and the second is the make
i.e. JT4RN is Japan Toyota pickup. the tenth letter/or/number tells the year of the vehilce, and the last six are the vehicle number of that year make model.
