R50/53 Looks like MINI is finally covering the ps pump failures for 13years or 150k miles.

This is great news!
Just coming up on 58K miles in my 2nd hand 05 MCS and the psp has been getting noisier and I was dreading the cost of doing the replacement...need new struts and a few bushings soon so it will be very stand-up of Mini to deal with the pump when it dies.
I have had zero other troubles with this car...love it, well, it would be nice if there was a bit more paint on the bonnet, but oh well. You can see through to the primer from behind when getting in the car..one more pass would have done it.Just got a Dinan strut tower bar....fun!

Seriously. Mine is a 2006 MCS and I just replaced my power steering pump over the winter due to failure. It was the same part and reason for failure as everyone else... I don't understand why 2006 would not be covered under this program.

I received the notice in yesterday's mail, and my first thought was how the heck did they find me?
2009 was the year Mister Q had major surgery. PS was the root of his problems, and a few other less major things, but the bill was about $5K. Getting any part of that back, even now, would be delightful.
Finding the receipt will be a challenge. I know I have it .. somewhere. That repair was 3 states ago, and 6 moves.
He's at 116K now, and the Power Steering is the only thing that continues to plague me with issues.

just got the letter today. truly amazing. although my power steering currently works (albeit suffers occasional drop-outs) a few years ago, it was cut off completely, lasting for about a year. i'm afraid part of the problem is in some sort of leak in the fluid system (possibly rack and pinion) so i hope they don't consider that a separate issue from the exposed fan problem that i assume they are mostly owning up to. the funny thing is, after my PS was out for that year, it mysteriously started working again after being told by the shop that it needed to be replaced for $700. of course, the reason my car was in the shop was because of complete catastrophic transmission failure, which cost $4000 in repairs. this leads me into the fingers crossed hope that some day they will own up to the terribly unreliable transmission which has cost many of us thousands of dollars. though i won't hold my breath.

Ours went out occasionally for months before finally quitting completely. If it stops once every week or two, that should be more than enough to get it to qualify for this - just my opinion, though!
I am a 2nd owner, 102k miles, also got the letter this week. I had it repaired at my local Bavarian specialist shop when the pump finally completely died last year and expect to get roughly $1k back just for the faulty parts.

Are there any warning signs/noises indicative of impending failure? I've noticed a low pitch (VERY low pitch) hum when the car is hot (typically when sitting in traffic). When I turn the steering wheel (while sitting at red light) the hum goes away (or gets softer) but returns when I re-center the wheel. Otherwise, everything else about the steering seems normal.

I just missed this thread and made a new one o well. I need to find my receipt too i want my money back, the question how long will it take to process everyone a check. I figure they haven't covered they 06 and up is because probably they had more complaints from 02 to 05 owners. i don't know

I would think if you have a steering system that goes out and comes back on you would be on the priority list. When the steering is doing this then in a turn it can cut out or in causing you to over or understeer in a matter of a second. This is the buggest concern safety wise, if its stays off like mine has its not a big deal the off and on is dangerous as all hell. I would make it a point to mention this to the dealer and they will see your point. They dont want to turn someone away and explain after why they did when you launch off an exit ramp.

I personally don't appear to have any issues with my PS pump, but one thing I'd like to mention is my steering feels like it has a dead zone in it. It makes a clunking sound when turning whether the car is off, turned on, cruising, or stopped. It's very miniscule, but it's enough to make me worry.
I have a hunch it might be the U-joints connecting the upper and lower steer shaft assembly. If that were to be the case, would getting this checked out be covered? I honestly don't know what it could be.
Any ideas?
