20 years Naval Aviation - Maintained ejection seats for the F-14 - (it is the thing that killed GOOSE in TopGun).

Retired in 1994 - as E-6.

Went on many cruises and have seen the entire world.

Just about to finish up 20 years active Air Force. Personnel officer (flesh peddler) by trade but spend my time as an instructor at that "Colorado School for Wayward Boys (AF Academy)" (Thx Sidbreen). Been to Germany, Sicily and Canada but bought the MINI locally. Great thread.

Cheers

Geoff

More than you probably want to know, but..... What really killed Goose was that in the movie they were simulating a flat spin in the F-14 brought on by a assymetric thrust caused by loss of one of the engines at a high angle of attack. The movie tried to make it out that flying through jet wash caused the problem. Not very likely.

There is a theory that in a flat spin, the RIO could collide with the canopy during the ejection sequence. Mini-rools, you can correct me on this, but if memory serves me, the rear seat fires exactly .2sec after the canopy jettisons. The thought is that the aerodynamics around the aircraft will not allow the canopy to move far enough away from the plane in that amount of time and the RIO could collide with it as he ejects. We have had numerous flat spins, all but 1 that the crew ejected from and never once has the RIO hit the canopy - except in that movie.

Yo! I'm a 91WM6 with the 352d CSH in Oakland, USAR. ETS is next June, hope to make it out before I get scorched for yet another Charlie Foxtrot from leaders who avoided military service... if I go, I do it for my fellow soldiers and do it well... not for the greed meisters running this country - currently.

Canopy is designed to eject directly aft and is on a lanyard that arms the seats and the seats go out left and right. So even in a flat spin the RIO could never hit the canopy under any condition. The canopy was put in the movie to create drama. I was in the squadron the helped with the film, I can really tell some stories about that movie being made.

MINI-Rolls - I have a lot of respect for AMEs; fortunately I never had to checkout any of their handywork. You must have been in the Gunfighters then when the movie was being made? I was in the Varks and did some of the flying off the Enterprise that was used in the begining and end of the movie. You are right, I have some stories too. That Hollywood crowd was a goofy bunch!

Don't have the time in the service that most of the other responders, but I put my 3 years in from 12/71 - 12/74. Spent a year at the 7th RRFS, Ramasan Station in Northern Thailand as a 72B in ASA. My oldest son is a SH60B pilot out of Mayport, FL. Will be visiting him just before heading to the Dragon.

Wow lots of airdales around here.

I've been in the Navy 11 yrs, all of it homeported in Hawaii. I'm an Engineman First Class, just finished 4 yrs on the USS Chosin CG-65 a guided missile cruiser out of Pearl Harbor. I bought my Mini last November, the day I got back from an 8 month cruise in the Gulf for Operation Iraqi Freedom.
