R50/53 Asc problems
Asc problems
Hi all, it's been a while since I've posted but my car has been treating me well!
'06 R53 S with jcw cold air intake. Clutch replaced at ~50,000 miles, all routine services done.
Just had quite a bit of work done on the car including new rotors/brakes, new motor mounts and some fluid flushes.
Since I've gotten my car back there have been two new problems. One is that when accelerating at higher speeds (I.e. freeway driving) the car shakes. If I take my foot off the gas, the shaking stops. Searches revealed that this could be due to bad motor mounts, which were supposedly just replaced?
The more annoying problem is my asc. Nearly every time now when taking off into a turn from a standstill, the asc light flashes and takes power away from me. I feel it skipping and it is doing this even when I try to take off nicely. (I'll admit I'm usually a pretty 'spirited' driver.) other than taking off the car accelerates normally and quickly a usual. I tried turning the asc off and taking off into a turn semi quickly and my tires spun and squeeled waaay more than they should have for the speed i was taking off at. I've tried searching these forums and beyond, to no avail.... Any input is appreciated, my baby is sick!

from my own experience, i had issues with bad motor mounts and gearbox mount. i replaced all of them and then it stopped.
i also had the front wheel bearings replaced because they were also in bad condition and also producing that shaking..
On one ocasion after installing aftermarket wheels, i didnt have the central rings in place, the difference was 56.1mm on the mini hub, and on the rim it was 57.1mm. its small but it was shaking. and one more thing that i had issues with is, what dannyhavok said about changing tires. although they may seem like they could run for a while, or look new whatever, my tires often get the invisible tubercle (first time i hear of this word, google translate suggested it, i would call it bump
).. after changing all of that, i had to adjust the wheel alignment, i dont know whats it called in english... could be that also..
edit.. and as for ASC, could be that the road is slippery or greasy. take it to some place where you know the asphalt is good, and then try

Okay, well I've gotten a solution to this and thought I'd post for others who want to know or might have the same issue.
I must say I was disappointed in the lack of responses, I usually get quite a few good opinions on here! Doesn't seem like a very common problem I guess. And I must admit I chuckled a bit at
"and as for ASC, could be that the road is slippery or greasy. take it to some place where you know the asphalt is good, and then try"
Like really? My ASC light was flashing around every corner on every road I drove on...
So anyway, my mechanic says it is a busted crankshaft pulley that is 'flopping around' and has chewed up my right wheel speed sensor. The broken wheel speed sensor is what's causing the ASC issue. So will be having both that and the pulley replaced. It is expensive, but my mini is my baby, so worth it!

Anyways there's more than a few great MINI shops out here, check out Motoring Magic in Thousand Oaks, best work around and no b.s.
Get another quote before you go all in with the pulley, and remember you want the newer version pulley put back in ie., ATI or 06' one.
Also clutch at 50,000? that seems way too early...
I'm a second owner and am at 60k now, no problems solid as when I bought it with 20k.
Did you buy new or used, maybe past owner didn't know how to use a clutch?

anyway, when i had a broken washer thats supposed to be on the crank pulley somwhere, i got the EML light on, ASC on, temp went to red, battery light was on, i could drive the car but like 10km/h, when i pressed the gas pedal i couldnt accelerate...
whats with the shaking? have you sorted it out? i also forgot to say, i had to replace both driveshafts. when accelerating the car would shake, when gas pedal released it would stop..
