The burning smell is the rubber. The middle part of the pulley has rubber connecting it to the outer ring of the pulley where the belt rides. When these get old the rubber drys out and eventually breaks. When that happens the middle part turns, but the outer stops so the middles is turning against the broken rubber making the smell. And when the alternator light came on that is when the belt came off cause it all fell apart.
Get the ATI damper and you'll be set.

You guys were exactly right, it was the dampener. Warranty covered the tow, repair and a rental. Ill have it back tomorrow, total out of pocket: $300

I would have liked to go with the ATI dampener, perhaps in the future to get the +2%, however Ive just come off a three month unpaid vacation and it just wasn't financially feasible.

Thank you for the help, this place is a great resource!

Glad you got it resolved under warranty for only $300.

I had a thought this morning, with the reduction pulley, will the factory belt work as I think that is what the replaced it with.

No, but I can't imagine them putting a reduction pulley on under any kind of warranty situation, although they may have replaced it with the lighter / better factory unit, if you had the heavier one to begin with. (they do tend to fail a little sooner, heavy one that is)

The belt was replaced during this service, I had the belt mini mania provided with the kit. Is this belt any different size than the factory belt?

EDIT: I just spoke with Ken at Mini Mania, he said the factory belt it okay but not optimal.

If I read this correct, you have a 15% supercharger pulley with a stock crank pulley (just replaced under warranty) and the dealership installed a stock (non-JCW) size belt.

I would replace the belt with a shorter belt to eliminate the belt slipping.

Did the dealership know you had a 15% pulley? If so, maybe they installed a JCW belt (shorter than stock) and you should be OK.

Does you paperwork include a P/N or size for the belt installed?

You read it correctly.

I haven't picked it up yet, I'll ask when I get there.

It could be a fine line about asking or telling them you have a 15% pulley since this was a warranty repair. They could argue that the 15% pulley attributed to the crank pulley failure. I am sure it did not but it could be an arguement. If the dealership is OK with mods than it would probably be good to make sure they installed the correct size belt for a 15% pulley. They should at least have a JCW belt in stock that they can install quickly.

This is the IDENTICAL experience to what happened to me last Weds. Minding my own business in the BK drivethru.....alt light came on, burning rubber smell, stationary belt.

I did notice that with the AC off, the belt did slowly turn, but give it any revs or turn the AC on and it stopped and the rubber in the pulley began to smoke.

My pulley lasted 137k miles, I replaced it with a 35k used pulley that I had. Not really a big job beyond breaking the low quality fasteners supplied with the puller. Once I replaced them with proper 12.9 class bolts things were easy.

Okay, I have the car back, and the tech said he put the smaller belt on it, the part number is 115031.

How many holes should show on top of the slack adjuster?

If you have one full hole showing, you are in good shape.

I am not sure what that P/N is. The two BMW P/Ns are:
Stock Size: 1388 BMW P/N 11287520199
JCW Size: 1374 BMW P/N 11287545120

The normal 15% belt size is Gates P/N K60535. 535 is the length, as in 53.5" which is equivalent to 1359 mm metric. A little shorter than the JCW at 1374 mm.

I agree that if you have one hole showing you are OK but I would check it after you put a few miles on the belt because it will probably streach out a little.

The belt they installed is the normal size belt. Makes me wonder why the tech said he installed a shorter belt. If it were me I would swap it out for a shorter belt. If you do not have the belt tensioner tool maybe you can borrow it from a local club member.
