R50/53 Best way to remove a nest?
Yep, it finally happened to me. I go to fill up the washer fluid and right there on the engine block...a nice (albeit slightly disheveled) nest. Probably a mouse. Quite frankly, at 7:30 in the morning and a foot of snow on the ground, I figured that I'd leave it until at least lunchtime.
What's the best way to get this out? Just use my snowbrush and have at it?

Wear gloves when you handle rodent droppings. A face mask would be even better to prevent getting the Hanta virus.
asodestrom: once you have gotten rid of the cat by tossing in a dog, how do you get rid of the dog?

A tiger maybe?
Anyways, personally I just use a stick to make sure no one is home, then pick it up and toss it in the trash. If someone is at home the proper response seems to involve standing on a chair, skirt lifting, and squealing, in no particular order...

b) get a cat....dogs are useless in these kinds of situations......
You just haven't seen my Jack Russell Terrier.
She will get rid of it quicker than any cat. cats play with mice, she doesn't.

How ever did I miss this thread.... Bob, I don't think that Raid actually does anything to rodents (or anything of the mammalian persuasion) other than perhaps causing nasty mutations. So, avoid the science fiction scenarios and get some rat poison (Decon). Sprinkle a bit down there near the nest if you need to leave the car parked again.
To prevent future infestations, throw a couple traps down in your garage. I prefer the stickey traps (as long as you don't have cats or dogs) because I like the mouse to think about how it messed up during its final hours
You could disconnect your air filter, aim the tube at the nest and suck it up. I think it would be covered under warranty. Maybe MINI division will chime in here on this one.

in Chat Vernacular, "OMFG! LOL!" This mouse tale has inspired some funny responses, err i mean, Creative Solutions...
The point about taking precautions against hanta is a good one...
My favorites are the 5 minutes of horn (but what if it's a deaf rodent?), and the 110mph one
If this problem had happened in Chicago a couple days ago, simply opening the bonnet (during that very gusty day) woulda sorted it.
Refer to the folk song "I know an old woman who swallowed a fly" (burl ives version) for definitive answers on what gets rid of what in the animal kingdom - but there's a caveat: beware of trying to fit some of the larger mammals (goat, cow, horse) from the song into your engine bay, unless of course you've thoroughly read the threads on detailing and treating scratches with Meguiar's...
and no, i don't know why she swallowed the fly (perhaps she'll die... )

I told someone at work about this, and they asked "Did you notice anything funny when you were driving?"
I said, "yes, the car wants to pull over every time I drive by a cheese shop!"

I have some actual suggestions if you're interested!
First, I had a similar problem with nests in my engine bay, but they were made by chipmunks, not mice. I got some small critter repellent from critter-repellent.com. I just started using it, so I can't say for sure that it has solved the problem.
To protect the wires from chewage, spray them periodically with bitter apple spray. You can get it in any pet store.

(Warning – do this at your own risk. Factuality not guaranteed)
First – you need a front air splitter to create more turbulence under the car. Next, you’ll need cowl scoops, which, in combination with the front splitter aerodynamics, will create huge vortices within the engine bay. After that, install an ALTA intake with tube to simulate the horn while at wide-open throttle. Finally, substitute water in your ALTA intercooler diverter sprayer with bitter apple spray. Finish the package by driving at top-speed for at least 5 minutes. That should compel the rodent to bail-out, and the nest will be whisked away by high winds! Be sure to NOT drive past any cheese shops while doing this, of course.
