****FRAUD WARNING****
Recently, several people advertising cars or parts in the classifieds have been contacted by thieves based in Nigeria using a counterfeit cashiers check scheme. Do NOT be enticed to sell to anyone in a West African country, and especially do NOT send money there. The thieves will try to get you to wire them a refund for overpayment on their counterfeit cashiers check.

More details here... www.state.ia.us/government/ag/consumer/advisories/Nigeria_Mar_2003.html

COMING TO YOU SOON IN THE LOCAL CLASSIFIED ADS/ONLINE AUCTION....

This scam has run everywhere--its been rampant in the horse industry as well.

What I want to know is, how many people ACUTALLY bought it? I've gotten more than 30 contacts from these guys, when I was advertising some horses. I still get spam requesting help with money transfers...

Not one of the email I received sounded legitimate at all-they all blatantly reeked of a scam. "Money for nothing"...and Nigerians writing in poor english (sure...)

So I want to know--how many times did it work? I've heard "the Feds are on it"...

I'm a bit skeptical that anybody is falling for this, if anyone ever did...especially this late in the game...
does anybody know anybody who knows anybody who knows someone who fell for it? (No names of course, to protect the embarrassed!) Just curious....

So if you deleate everything why even have email. That would be like having a phone, but it's not pluged in. I don't get it.

I hate to say it, but I like Bill Gates idea of some kind of postage or fee system. Somehow the SPAM has to stop. It is getting ridiculous at this point and I would be suprised at the entire costs for business because of SPAM. I would guess it is well into the Billions of dollars a year. Just think of all the companies that use outside services to filter SPAM, the extra bandwidth on all points of the internet....

I'm over 60 and I like fried Spam sandwiches - but I delete spam on the net.

I get these scam emails at work all the time.
I report them to the IT authorities so that they can be recorded and maybe tracked down.
What a waste of bandwidth.

my homie almost did this a few months back when he was trying to sell his 300zx. He posted his car up for sale in the z31 forums and then he got an email from a "buyer". The buyer got my friend's phone # and was actually contacting him through email and by phone saying "i'll send you a check. i'll send a shipping agent to pick up the car. give him *x-amount of money*('his fee'), and keep everything else."

The thing is, it all sounded too good to be true. His Z needed SERIOUS work, and the "buyer" was just offering way too much. so my friend posted about this in the forum, and thank goodness they'd heard of and told him about the scam. a check actually came in, but the guys in the forum told him that the check is fake. so he just tossed the thing and forgot about it. i think the "buyer" got fed up and just plain stopped contacting him.

so it's not just the "old people" ... but those desperate to get rid of something. good thing my friend's "this-is-too-good-to-be-true" alarm turned on.

now e-bay scams?.... MAN... be careful out there

You're dead on. For these scams to work, you need tons of susceptible people. The amazing thing about all this is that these banks can't tell that these cashier cheques are fakes until a few days later.

I always wonder who goes for the classified adds say in USA today offering all SORTS of stuff and deals, somebody does though, cuz they keep appearing......I often wonder if the saps are not the ones that DON't look into those.

Re mail and spam......I am very leery of anything unfamiliar coming to my computer, and I don't suffer from spam because I am pretty ruthless.......I happened to have received a couple of Nigerian deals in the last couple of weeks and I have a sense it is because my true e-mail is available on this site. Maybe a mistake but hey, gotta have faith.......

I beg to differ....scams come a distant fourth:
1) Oil
2) Corruption
3) More corruption
4) Scams!
