AT vs MT engine/ Crankshaft differences

I just picked up an 2003 r50 base with 5-speed. I knew this when I got it. But the engine is toast.

Question: I have access to a couple of auto engines but I saw different part numbers for the crankshafts AT vs MT. Does this mean a flywheel will not bolt onto an automatic engine? Im guessing vice versa? What are the differences? Can they be converted sans crankshaft swap?

Thanks in advance!

hmmm they shouldn't be because a common swap for us with the dreaded CVT is the getrag manual. bolts right up so there really shouldn't be any issue bolting the engine to the manual tranny.

I tried searching for trans swaps, auto to manual, because that is essentially the same thing as putting an auto engine in a manual car. Every one I found just said don't do it or just buy a different car. Have people successfully converted their auto to manual? Do you have any links? I just really get worried when I see different crankshaft part numbers. Funny thing is if you order a new short block from mini, they only have one part number auto or manual.

I figure the only difference would be a pilot bearing installed in the end of the crankshaft. Maybe thats the difference in the part numbers?

this is the main discussion thread for CVT to 6 speed Getrag. Way Motor Works is the shop that does the tuning for the new transmission. but since your doing a straight engine swap, you shouldn't need to have anything reflashed. just drive your car normally while it relearns your driving pattern.

I wouldn't worry to much it will all bolt together and work fine.

This is interesting. Why then does Mini provide two different crankshaft
part numbers to service the R50 applications?

Has anyone placed the automatic and manual transmission crankshafts side by side for a comparison?

BMW has made a great deal of money by reassigning part numbers to the same parts (why would someone with a R56 buy the $600 part if the R53 version is the same at $200?)

there's been plenty of auto to manual swaps done in both R50's and R53's to prove they are the same without yanking some out of some engines.
