R50/53 Rain Sensor Issues and Fix
Rain Sensor Issues and Fix
2005 Mini Cooper. Windshield replaced - rain sensor does not work
Common issue as I searched the web for results. Most discussed the mounting of the sensor.
Well the issue was the connector. One of the pins in the connector was not connecting!. The shop put in several windshields and new rain sensors with all the same results.
So if you windshield is replaced ( and this goes for BMWs as well)
have the connector inspected to insure all the pins are good and there is good electrical contact.
It is usually the simple things that go wrong.....

In my case I could set off the wipers by tapping the windshield. All of the sensors that I got in three different cheap windshields were not glued on correctly. PGP glass was the solution with the sensor glued on correctly.
OK First the shop that did the windshield should look into your issue. Safelite did mine and the tech worked hard to solve the problem.
The rain sensor is located directly behind the rear view mirror.
There is a black plastic cover that can be gently pull off.
The sensor is a black box that looks like the one in the picture at this link:

It is removed by sliding the two (left and right) slide pins and it pops off. Be careful not to pull the wires - It is best to remove the connector/wires first.
In my case one of the connector pins was not making contact. The tech was able to push the pin in to make contact with the sensor. This solved my issue.
I have read that other issues can be the type of glass used and how well the mounting gel is "glued" to the windshield where the sensor is mounted. I did nto have these issues.
Note the sensor also works the auto headlights...
Good luck
