Midland 5 Speed

Hey guys, I've been reading up on this forum as well as other sites on the issues and problems with the Midland gearboxes. So far, my '04 with 59000kms is doing well. The previous owners seemed to have taken good care of it and the last tranny flush was done at 53000kms.

My question is should I be concern about my tranny? What would you say the percentage of good ones compared to the failed ones? Are they mostly in certain areas of the country? I don't see a lot coming from Canadian owners or maybe they just done follow these enthusiast sites.

I will try to keep a watch on the fluids but it bothers me to know that it could fail at anytime. What to do? Thanks,

I don't know about percentages. But you already own the car, so your best option as I see it, is to change the fluid periodically, and not abuse it.

One thing I can say is that I really haven't heard mass failures recently. I did buy my car 16 months ago with a failed Midlands, but it also had bald front tires, a teenage driver, and a bunch of other neglect, so the Midlands may not have been completely to blame. I'm almost thinking that most of the bad transmissions may have already surfaced. Another bit of advice I can give is to stop driving the car on the first sign of trouble. They can be rebuilt as long as it doesn't grenade itself and break the case.
