cam bolt removal...do I really need the Bmw tool?
I own a 2004 jcw. I'm putting in a schrick cam. But I saw a write up that said I needed a Bmw cam bolt removal tool...but also said there are other Ways. Anyone know any of these other ways? I would buy the tool but its like 200 bucks.
I didn't use the BMW tool. I put the car in 6th gear and had a friend step on the brakes. After that its pretty easy to crack the bolt loose. To remove the sprocket from the camshaft I then loosened the timing chain tensioner a little until the sprocket and chain wiggled off. This ensures the chain doesn't drop too much and slip off the lower crank sprocket. A little redundant but I also zip-tied the chain to the cam sprocket again keeping correct timing. Remember to buy a new cam bolt as it needs to be replaced after it stretches.
thanks for the help!!!
