Want recommendations for struts/shocks

My 05' S is in need of struts and shocks on all four corners. I was thinking of going with Konis but of course my replacement comes at a time when I also need to change all 4 tires. Tirerack has a sale on Konis but between labor and the need for 4 tires they may be too expensive for me. So, I was hoping you all would have some suggestions as to what you may have used on your Mini and if anyone has a website they found good prices on that would be much appreciated as well.

My Mini is not tracked and I don't mind if the ride is a bit firmer that stock.

Thanks,

Ron B.

I would spend your budget on tires first as safety comes first.
You can still ride on your existing shocks until you save up enough money to buy and install replacement shocks and an alignment.
You have a lot of choices with struts & shocks. Bilsteins sports or tourings, Konis, OEM and stock. Coilovers are also a choice but they cost a lot more money.
You will have to decide exactly what you are looking for in terms of ride quality vs handling.
For a daily driver, do you really really want a stiffer ride. Shoot, unless you have smooth roads everywhere, I think the ride is stiff enough with stock.
Remember, you will have to live with the stiff ride for a long long time. And your lady will not appreciate it either I'm sure.
There is enough experience on this board to give you good advice on what combination you should choose. i suggest you search the archives first for that advice.

Check out the Hankook Ventoux Evo for tires. I just put a set on my 06 for ~$650 from Discount Tires. Really nice tires.

As for shocks, I would avoid used. Do it right, do it once. Just replace the front first if you have to split it up. They are probably the worst off and will make the most noticeable difference.

I would recommend finding some other Mini owners who have done various mods. I was fortunate to drive a Mini with a slight lowering and a set of Vmax coil overs. Too harsh for my needs. I also tried another with a set of Koni yellows and a firmer spring set that I don't believe was lowered. The firmer spring was tenacious in handling but still bait too abrupt.

I have decided I will be installing Koni FSD with the stock springs and also remaining with fresh rubber bushings as the poly units seem to be to stiff. My specific application is for fun spirited driving, daily driver on harsh roads with occasional dirt camp roads.

When thinking about what is best, keep in mind how you drive and what you want to have for feedback and feel.
