2004 ABS pump problems
Hello,
This is my first post after a long absence. Forgive me if problem has already been discussed -- if it has, my search-fu failed me!
I've got a Feb 2004 Cooper S (w/ASC, w/o DSC) which was diagnosed by the dealer as having a bad ABS control unit (ASC + Check Engine lights come on intermittently, sometimes separately, sometimes together). I don't know the specific codes it threw. Not wanting to pay the dealer $2000+ plus to replace it, I bought a used pump/control unit assembly off a Dec 2003 S in a boneyard that, as far as I can tell, is identical spec to mine. All part numbers on the original & replacement match.
The independent BMW shop that installed it for me is reporting that it's throwing several codes (LF wheel speed sensor, wrong variant, coding error, maybe others) and that he cannot clear them. In addition, it does not see the LF wheel speed sensor at all, though it sees the other three.
So I'm trying to find out if I should expect this used part to work. Does it need to be recoded? Can it be recoded? Would it be expected to see these sorts of errors until it is recoded? Or maybe the replacement is defective.
The local Mini dealer can't tell me if a used pump would need recoding before it would work -- all they say is, "Bring it in." I suspect they'll then just say, "Need new pump -- $2000."
Anyone been through this and have some wisdom they can share?
Thanks!

I crosslinked this thread from the "Stock Problems" subthread, so I'll crosslink the "solution" to the problem here:

Short story: Technician wiped all programming then reprogrammed the control unit and so far all is well!
