Pulley Mod

Looking to change out the supercharger pulley on my '06 S. Looking for some advice...15% or 19% smaller pulley. I'm also installing cold air intake and exhaust. But, I just wonder if going to the 19% smaller pulley is okay with this being a daily??

Thanks!!

Andrew

If you are only doing a CAI , Pulley and exhaust you're best to stay with a 15% - 17% reduction. You will notice the improved performance immediately with either and both are good for a daily driver. The 19% pulley requires larger injectors and a tune and is a bit extreme in my opinion!

I think you'll be able to find many posts/advice if you search in Gen. One performance mods/ engine mods. Another good route to go is call Way or Helix, they're on here and will steer you straight!

15% or 17% imo...
19% are pretty rare...many folks have tried them, only to revert to a bigger 17% or 15% due to issues....
many threads, and lots of info around about this, just remember, a pulley no tune, is just leaning your mixture When On Throttle, as pre determined values are used sine the o2 feedback is not fast enough...in very light acceleration or cruising the o2 sensor and computers adjust the mixture...
Even with a 17%, the mixture can be a bit lean at very high rpms....but most 17% drivers are there for moments.....the 15% is great for most folks....the 17% has more boost lowdown, but a bit less due to heat at higher rpms...so is a great, non tracked daily driver option imo.
Good luck, and enjoy
And just for referance, the r53 jcw engine kit as about a 14% pulley, bigger injectors and tune on post 2005 cars, along with a intake and exaust for 210 hp..(also a slightly ported cnc machined head).
Earlier cars had a slightly different kit....for 200 hp... coated sc (standard on all post 2005 cars), and no intake, no bigger injectors, and a different tune...same head as 2005+ cars...

Another factor is heat...
The samaller pulley makes the sc less efficent, makeing more heat, and in the end less hp in many cases...
So if you live in a hot area, will do stop and go driving, lots of traffic lights...not a great option.
second factor is octane...
If you live in an area with 93 or 94, great, the extra octane helps with the heat from the sc, preventing issues....
So with lower octane, more traffic or higher temps, a bigget pulley, meaning less reduction is usually best..

Just stick with a 15% or 17%. The 19% is overkill, heck we don't even make a 19%. The 17% will get you a little more low end torque, but at the higher rpms it isn't going to make more power.
I personally have a 15% on my daily driver.

I have the 15% on my daily. Increase in power was amazing and immediately noticed.

Changing it out is a snap with proper tools. I used the instructions on Way's site and the Cravenspeed pulley puller which allows you to pull the stock pulley without removing the tensioner assembly. In fact, I'm selling my puller tool now as I no longer need it.

If it is just a daily I'd suggest the 15% or maybe the 17%. But in most cases the 15% is just fine.

If you havent purchased any of the other mods yet, I suggest looking at the kit from outmotoring.com

https://www.outmotoring.com/mini-coo...speed_kit.html

Its customizable to what exhaust and intake you want and pretty much comes with everything you'd want to do for basic mods.

I did the Magnaflow exhaust, 15% pulley, Alta CAI, and added a belt on to the kit since mine looked original.

SC Pulley sqeak

Maybe a little off topic, but looking for another opinion. I just put in a WMW 15% pulley on last weekend. I followed the instructions for the Craven pulley. Worked fine for about three days. Now I have a squeak that seems to be coming from the SC pulley. This happen to anyone else before? I'm hoping there is an easy fix that doesn't involve me pulling off the pulley again... Here's a video of the squeak:
