Anyone know if an aftermarket autodimming mirror can be installed? Is this a MINI dealer available item?

I believe you can install the original OEM MINI auto dimming rear view mirror in your car as the required wiring is already there. You should be able to purchase it from your dealer parts counter. Research in Google.com. There are aftermarket companies that also manufacture this type of mirrors. The one in the MINI is made by a company called Donelly.

the option only comes with auto wipers from the factory, are you sure the wiring is there without both options?
The S has them but the cooper doesn't so I guess I could go look

Yes, an aftermarket mirror can be installed, although it might be better to install OEM mirror. Here's the part number:

51 16 1 508 456
List price: $164

For vehicles without auto-dimming mirror option, the wires aren't there. At least I didn't find them when I installed the OEM mirror on my 2004. There are 3 wires for the mirror: (+) for ignition on, (-) ground, and override lead for reverse. Only (+) and (-) required for the mirror to function.

Just out of curiosity, when you installed the auto-dimming mirror did you have to get a new windshield? I have the option from the factory and it plugs in to the sensor on the windshield. When I had to have my windshield replaced, I had to use OEM glass because they don't make an aftermarket windshield with the sensor/outlet.

That sensor is for the rain sensing wipers and has nothing to do with the auto-dimming mirror.

As for the wiring being there, probably not. The auto-dimming mirror and rain sensor are on the same harness. The mirror will fit, but you'll need to run switched positive and then a ground. There is also another wire on the mirror that detects when you are in reverse. This is so the mirror's auto-dimming function does not operate when backing up, however you don't really need to hook that up.
