Window Issue

The other day I was on my way home and went to roll my driver's side window down. Nothing.

I tried the other window and the sunroof; they both worked fine.

So I tried turned the car off and started it again and tried my driver's side window. Still nothing.

Since I had stuff to do that afternoon, I didn't bother searching around. The next time I got in the Mini I expected not to have a working driver's side window, but it rolled down and up just fine. And it worked perfectly for several days after that.

Today it stopped working again, which leads me to believe it's just a connection gone faulty. Before I get in there and poke around, I was wondering if anyone knows off the top of their head what I should be looking for, and where the connections are to check out.

Thanks for the advice.

Odds are it's your window motor. They tend to freeze up over time. The poor man's fix is to bang on the door with your fist above the speaker. This will free up the brushes, and your window should work again, at least temporarily.

Giving the door panel a good hard smack works pretty well - I've been doing it for over 2 years and each time buys me another few months of operation, which is good enough for me not to fix it. Tends to get stuck if I haven't driven the car for a few days. The advice above about where to hit the door is right on. Also helps to be holding the window switch in the down position when you smack, so the shock starts it moving.

I'm a big fan of poor man fixes like that. I'll try it out.

Have you found any success with cleaning the motor? I was gonna take off the door panels to reconnect my speakers anyway...

Window works fine again, but I'm looking forward to the next time it doesn't so I can test the "just bang on it" fix. Thanks, everyone.
