The Peake Scan Tool may or may not read BMW specific codes. But what about this bit...

... For example, you've done an oil change yourself. If you don't have this scan tool, the lights on the dash need to be reset, which means making an appointment at the shop, and taking it in to the mechanic, and all that hassle just so the shop can plug in their tool and reset everything. Then you have to pay a bill for that service. You don't need to go through any of that hassle if you have your own scan tool!
As posted in several places, and on page 020-36 of the Bentley manual, you reset this by holding the trip reset button, turn ignition to position 1, wait for current status, release trip button, press and hold trip button for 5 seconds, until it flashes rst, then press trip again. And say five Hail Marys.

I pulled this from this forum somewhere. Just did oil change last week. And after some trial and error It does work.

Resetting Oil Service Light on your 2002 - 2006 MINI Cooper and Cooper S, and 2007 - 2008 MINI Convertibles:

1) Press and hold the trip button
2) Insert key and turn to position 1
3) Watch for RESET to appear
4) Release the button, then press & hold it again
5) Wait for the RESET to flash
6) Release the button, and then press & release (once only)
7) Service interval should then be reset to next interval

If that didn't work, try this:

1. Push the Trip Button
2. Turn ignition key to position 1 and 51A will appear to left of mileage
3. Release trip button
4. Wait 3 seconds
5. Push trip button
6. Wait (5-8 seconds) for RST to appear in left corner
7. Release trip button
8. Push trip button
9. 15000 will appear as new service interval
10. Release trip button

Or this:

1. Press and hold the trip odometer button.
2. Insert car key and turn it to the fi rst position (not the second position).
3. You will see 51A come up in the trip odometer area.
4. Release, then press and hold again.
5. Watch for the word “RST” to appear on the Odometer indicator.
6. Release, then press and hold again.
7. Wait for the “RST” message to fl ash.
8. Release, and then press & release (once only).

What they say is true if you don't know about the method you describe and you aren't Catholic.

Resetting the oil change counter can be very trial and error when doing it manually. It usually took me a few tries to get it reset manually. I purchased the Peake Tool and life is much easier.

Quikmni, I'm not sure I'd spend $139 on a tool that you use once every 6,000 to 15,000 miles. I did my oil yesterday and somehow reset it the first try -- probably because I'd been warned it was tricky and was paying extra attention to follow the instructions exactly. And they really ought not to tell you your only other choice is to take it to the dealer.

The other part, about reading codes that a normal OBD II reader can't is interesting. I [strike]should email[/strike] emailed them and see if they can be more specific.

Yeah I got the peake tool for that and to read a code I was getting at the time, still have never been able to get the peake tool to reset it, tried a million times, always end up doing manually so I wouldn't waste the money just to reset the service timer.

I sure have got adequate usage out of the tool. Over the 8 years of having Mini Coopers I have used it about 20 times to reset the oil change counter on mine and other Minis. I have also used it multiple times to read and reset codes on my car and other Minis. You can also find the tool on sale or for sale used.
I sure have purchased other $100 tools that I have used much less than the Peake tool.

Do an eBay search on "Mini Cooper Reset" and you will find a tool that works perfectly, is easy to use and only cost $17 including shipping.

It won't read codes but it will do the resets with no drama.
