Cutting the stock airbox?

Hi All! Just wanted some thoughts on my thinks. I thinks that instead of shellin out a few hundred bucks on a cai, why not cut the stock airbox away, leaving the K&N drop in I have in place and creating the heat barrier with the engine side of the box? I would leave the intake hose in place to take in outside air as well. Not tryin to be a cheapskate, but I just threw down for a sprint booster for my 06 Justa and thought I could get best of both worlds. Hadda choose which thing to buy for the budget. Hope the sprint booster works as claimed, cuz my wife is gonna kill me if I spend any more loot on my scoot and Ill need that instant response for the getaway!! lol Any and all thoughts/experiences welcome, hecklers too! Stay thirsty my friends

If find a way to increase the amount of air getting into thebox, while keeping the hot air out, it will help too..the stock box has a small hole on the firewall side to let in air, and the perfrerations on the bottom of the box for extra air, and to let water out (in addidition to the snorkel hose that comes from the front).(on the s anyway, not sure about a regular cooper)
Mods could be made to work with a drop in panel filter, or a cone....
The simplest cai's are mostly a piece a cut metal, and a filter, with the adaptor for the cone filter..if you are creative, I think you can save some $$ and still have good performance and have it look ok.

Thanx zippy! I guess the worst thing that could happen is notice performance drop, and find another airbox, and then retire my dremel tool! Did similar thing to my Victory. KN filter, and just drilled holes into the front of the airbox. Woke it up for sure!

I can't help too much, I have an '06 Justa as well. First off, the sprint booster was one of the best things I've done to the car. I also have an aFe CAI and it's great, sounds awesome and noticeable grunt over 4000rpm. If you screw up your stock airbox and need another one, I'll sell you mine

Cool! I have a back up plan now! lol Ive been following you progress with yours, love those wheels. I dropped in a KN instead of cai. I dont think i get the fun sound you have, but it did wake up the car. Also have a sprint booster on order to get rid of the lag time. That should make it feel faster to me anyway! lol wish i had tons of loot to spend on this thing, but then again, something cool about the justa as it is. If i want more, Ill spend the $$ on a brand new JCW S!! lol Get down to Boston so I can hear that Borla exhaust too!!!!!! lol excuse to take a drive right?? research, yeah yeah thats it!

Thanks! I got these Konigs because the tire shop could cut me a deal on them.. I didn't like them much at first, but they're pretty light and the look has grown on me. I think you're right about drop-in vs. CAI, sound is the only real difference I'm told. I do like that growl though! Haha Boston would be quite the roadtrip for me from Victoria, but it could happen! When I get the Borla on I'll get a couple of video clips up here so you can check out the sound
