Crank pulley and CV joints? Help, car stranded. :(

Hello, new member, first post...bad circumstance. :(

I was driving in Oklahoma City this past weekend in my 05 MCS when all the sudden I heard a noise and the cars' guages lit up like a christmas tree and I could see the serpentine belt hanging.

I had it towed to Jackie Cooper BMW/Mini in Edmond and they have told me I need to replace the crank pulley and the CV joints. Price they quoted was around $1500. I don't use stealerships, so I was hoping to find out from someone what I should do to get this fixed the cheapest way.

I see some crank pulleys on ebay for around $80 and some axle shafts for around $60 each.

Any help would be appreciated...are there any good mini shops in OKC area that I can trust not to screw me like a stealership? Thanks so much in advance!

Would it be better or cheaper to just replace the whole axle instead of the cv joints? I'm trying to find out which cv joints are bad from the mechanic...

with the CV joints it really depends on how bad they are.. once the grease leaks out they self destruct as they collect dirt.. you could re-build them ($60 per side for the boot+grease kit) that's what i do to mine as i want to keep the stock ones as long as possible.

I also think it's strange that someone doesnt make kevlar lined boots that last the life of a car - such a waste to keep replacing them because of a rubber boot when the metal joint could last the life of the car if it never became contaminated.

Where did you get that $60 per side figure? Is that for parts only or for parts and labor?

Are there 4 cv joints on the front? 2 joints per axle? I know nothing about cv joints so if you could educate me I would be forever grateful! Thanks for the reply element!
