The MC40 doesn't "need" anything except what MINI USA wanted to put on it. It's already different enough "looking" and if people want to tart up their MINI's to copy it, so be it. Again, if you have the cash and want to get into the collectible game this is one way to do it. Numbered editions - it's like art, fine watches or special eiditon cameras. Does that comparison make things any clearer? It's not about putting a 250hp special edition together, which may have made some people truly drool.
And I suspect some people already think ANYONE driving a MINI looks like an idiot driving around with bonnet stripes and driving lights, not just an MC40.

Its a great looking car, no argument. I love it. And, I'm glad that the anniversary is being celebrated, but BMW is not an altruistic organization. They don't make MINIs because the world will be a better place. They make MINIs to make money.
As for the rationale for the $6000 bump in price. Yes options are expensive. They're too expensive. They are the high-margin items that actually make a better return than the sale of the basic car.
The MINI is a great, fun car at an amazing price point. They've cut a few corners to keep the price down, but I'm thrilled with the result. But, again, they didn't do this to thrill me. BMW created an 'entry' vehicle for the rest of their product line.
I think they're doing a little more here than just celebrating an anniversary. I think they're testing the price elasticity of the MINI market. If you'll pay $27K for a non-JCW 'anniversary' MINI, maybe you'll pay $24K for a base model, and $29K with a JCW..
Sorry to be so cynical. I love my MINI, but BMW is a big corporation and I don't have any illusions abou them.
