R50/53 what's the story with body color wheel arches/lower bits?

forgive me if this is a stupid question, but i'm new...

most of the mini's i've seen have (matte?) black "ground effects", for lack of a better term. i've seen a few where those are body color, and i really prefer that look.

when i "Build a Mini" on the miniusa site and add the aero kit, it changes the door area to body color, but the rest stays black.

is there a factory option that has everything from the glass down body color?

if the areo kit doesn't make everything body color, are the black parts matte, or painted?

thanks for the help.

The black matte you see is the normal stock plastic side skirts, wheel arches, and lowest bumper trim. It is normal for every MINI.

When you order or install the MINI aerokit ($1200 for parts) you now have the "choice" to decide if you would like to pay for the painting of the black matte pieces to whatever color you would like. I have seen the wheel arches and trim done in body color, silver, or gloss black. All look fine. I have even seen the wheel arches left unpainted and only the side skirts painted body color to the trim line then matte black.

The aero kit itself is primed and unpainted ready to go whatever you choose.

You can do anything you want but it all adds to labor and cost of materials for the body shop so in my area the full aerokit installed in about $3000-3500 in addition to your MINI. Most people don't even get the used parts back.

good grief, i like the painted lowers, but not enough to drop $3k on them.

is it possible to have the stock matte black parts painted?

Yes you can do any paint job you want. Paint the wheel arches and side skirts and or the lower black trim on the bumpers front and back. All or parts of it as you like. A body shop can give you an estimate on it. You don't really need the aerokit to do the painting. Your choice.

Ok, now that we have our car I've changed my tune on the plastic body bits. Washing the car is sooo much easier when the lower parts are plastic. That's where most of the gunk collects (besides the boot) and it's so easy to scrub them down with a bristle brush. No more worrying about dragging all that crap across the paint when I'm cleaning. I defanitly don't want to paint those bits now.
