After a period of very cold weather my transmission has developed a whine, especially is 5th gear. Also a chatter when cold and clutch released in neutral at idle. Are the transmissions prone to problems, I have not heard of this? 30k miles 11/02 build '03 MC base.

Yes, there are known issues with the Cooper 5-speed. It is due for an overhaul to a 5 speed version of the MCS Getrag tranny in 2005. A number of Cooper owners have had their tranny's replaced due to some of the problems with it. If you're concerned, I would not hesitate to contact your dealer with any questions and to schedule a check up of the problem.

Unfortunately, the R65 Midland Gears 5-speed gearbox in the base Cooper is known to have durability issues. A few Cooper 5-speed owners have had their trannys replaced in recent weeks with similar symptoms to yours, so your best bet is to take it back to the dealer and have them look at it. It is likely your car is a candidate for a new gearbox.

I wonder if they will replace ailing 5-speeds with the Gertrags once those are available. Could this swap be done?
