typically, it takes between 1 day and 3 weeks for your MINI to sift through Customs and the entry Port. Your wait will be worth it, but don't hold your breath! I know your pain, I've been through it twice

Customs isn't going to be the delay at the port of entry...

It's the BMW/MINI Vehicle Processing Center that will be your delay. If you're lucky, it your car will be through the VPC and enroute to your dealer w/in 48 hours of being offloaded from the ship.

However, if you're unlucky... It could take in excess of 14 days. These delays can be do to any number of things including a backlog of vehicles at the VPC (common over the holidays) to noticeable damage to the car occuring in transit. If it's any consolation if your car is stuck waiting to get into the VPC, BMW/MINI is paying the local port authority for the pier space your car is taking up...

At this time last year, the VPC in NJ had a 2 week backlog, and the one in California had one in excess of 3 weeks, however the SC VPC had no backlog...

EDK...the port of NY is in NJ. Your car is driven off the boat and sits in a big parking lot at the port. The VPC is in the parking lot. Not to worry.

Officially it's the Port of New York and New Jersey. Relax, the car will come... I know it's hard I went through the same thing exactly a year ago.

Call Ask-MINI with your production number, they should be able to tell you if the car has had a service ticket printed at the VPC yet, that means that the car has been accepted and is being processed by the VPC. Of course the day that Ask-MINI told me the car was at the VPC was actually the day may car was put on the truck and delivered to my dealer...

What's really strange about the procedure is that delays are usually caused by a lack of a certificate of origin, a friggin piece of paper that the manufacturer must supply with each new vehicle so that it can "enter" the USA. They can make the car, put it in que, load it on an ocean transporter, let it travel for a week to its destination, unload it, place it in a bonded warehouse lot, etc. all before some little geek back at the home office can get it together enough to make out a one page report and get the report to the custom's agent.??!! Gotta love the efficiencies we have built right into the system, not.
