I'll admit it, I'm a wuss - I would like less demanding transmission if I could get one in a MINI (whenever I get one, that is). Currently, at least in Canada, there are only manual options; does anyone know if and/or when there will be clutch-free tranny of some sort in the Cooper around here?

I do want SOME driving enthusiasm, so I'm not the sort who insists upon a full auto. I'd like something like BMW's SMG system (or at least an auto with a manual override option). If it's full auto, will it be CVT, or the "usual?"

I'd certainly be willing to improve my clutching for the sake of the MINI (it's a great car, from everything I hear!), but as a young city-dweller, not having to dance your feet around the floor of the car can be a good thing.

They had one at Mini-Yaletown (Vancouver, BC) not that long ago. When I went to pick up my MCS, I had to run some errands. So the one guy there took out the CVT Cooper and took me around. It was a first time driving it for both of us, because they just got it in. It ia a clutchless set up. But you have all your auto gears, and then you can slap it over and do your manual shifting. Takes a little to get used to. Having no clutch there was a little too weird in a manual shifter. Didn't get to play around too much. But it looks like you have to keep your foot on the gas. Being there is no clutch, it does it automatically.

Thanks MadMan, I guess they're out there and you just have to hunt for them. The MINI Canada website doesn't indicate anything more, and of course you never really hear about that transmission being mentioned. Thank goodness there's a pseudo-manual option for the auto (although it's not the same as a manual that just happens to be clutchless).

The dealer I mentioned in the last post just got their CVT in as a demo back last month. Just to show people what it's all about. I think they said they weren't available until November production. Don't quote me on that though. But they are out there. Just contact your local Mini dealer. They should have some answers for ya. Whereabouts in Canada are you? Happy hunting.
Cheers,
