I saw a Prius recently and it had a few really interesting features.

One of them was the ignition disable if the key wasn't within a certain distance from the car. Does anyone know of an aftermarket immobilizer kill that operates in this way? Seems interesting.

Do you want it for a different car? Because the MINI already has this feature.

^ Well, actually, that's not quite right...at least not in the same sense as the Prius. The MINI does indeed have a chip in its key that must be in proximity to the ignition switch for the car to start. On the other hand, the MINI's chip system implements no other proximity controls. On the Prius, the car has (multiple?) sensors which sense your (actually, the key's) proximity to do things like un-locking doors, setting/disabling the alarm, recalling individual driver amenity profiles, etc. The MINI's system is ONLY for the ignition.

One more thing about the MINI ignition system.

The chip is only read when you start the car.

If you start the car, and then take the chip away
from the ignition system, it keeps running.

Of course that would never happen unless you
did THIS to your key
