I read on Bridger.us/mini that come springtime there will be three new wheels offered by MINI, the R91, R92 and R93 (http://bridger.us/mini/).

I wonder if the 17" S-type wheel will still be offered as well?

Not sure but I'm "guessing" that the R91 will be replacing the R83 16" five spoke
R92 replaces the R85 17" S-lytes
and R93 replaces the R86 15" star spoke
This is based on what looks the most similar to the new designs. Nothing official yet.
R91

Gabe,
Thanks for the scoop and pictures!

I'm having visions of those 17" R92 rims powdercoated black on my car......hummm, well if they're at the very least 3-5 pounds lighter than the S-lites I'm sold.

Oh, very nice, I like the R91s.

Can't wait to get specs like weight, price, sizes.
I'd assume that like the other MINI wheels these will be available in silver and white.
Very nice!

BTW here's a link to the story. http://www.bridger.us/mini/?Y=2003&M...ComingFromMINI

Interesting to see the reaction here is fairly positive in comparison to this: http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthrea...ge=1&pp=20

They're all kind of ugly, though the 92 is the least so. Plus they all look heavy.

What they should do is come out with a new improved S-lite that weighs less and looks more like the Panasports that were so popular on the classic Minis.

Ugly is subjective. Obviously MINI would not turn out wheels that they "thought" were ugly. That would not be very smart. Lets assume the likely-that MINI did some product design testing with MINI owners and prospective owners about the new designs and these were probably the most favorable choices.

For those of us that think we can do a better design please do turn those in to MINIUSA by next friday to be included in the next round of wheel designs.

Thanks Gabe for your behind the scenes take on this. I hope the new wheels are cheap, light, strong, and look great on the new MINIs!

>>I know this may rattle some feathers but according to someone very familiar with the situation there is a very good reason why MINI's wheels tend to be fairly heavy. Lets just say it has to do with high speed stability and twitchiness. To understand what I'm talking about try driving a MINI with 14 pound 16" wheels at 100mph and then drive one with S-lites and compare.

===>Point well taken, Gabe . I like to hit 100 mph & my aftermarket 17.5 pounders do me solid

Anyway take it for what it's worth. I was told this by someone who is in the know when it comes to these things. And when I say 100mph I was just throwing out a number. As much as I love my MINI the fact remains it isn't the most stable car due to a number of reasons. However if you are primarily under 35mph and you autoX the lighter wheels are certainly a better choice.

Okay back to your regularly scheduled wheel debate...

I don't really care for any of them. The first one reminds me of VW wheels and the third one looks like it would be a pain to clean with that little "slot" in the spokes.

I'll save my money for some nice Panasports.

I still prefer the S-Lites, although an official MINI contract deal with Panasports / Minilites would be my first choice for dealer installed wheels.

Presumably they'll look better actually installed on a car. Right now none of them do anything for me (and the R83s are my favorite MINI wheels! ).
