R50/53 The most expensive Mini

Here's hoping the 16 yr old kid with the kewl MINI gets to make LOADS of what will surely become fond memories later on...
16 yr old Tatt was the orgasmically overjoyed recipient of the white-on-green 1967 Volkswagen "microbus" that had been in my family since it was purchased new by my mom's father... Mom LOVED that van, she was so mad, she almost divorced dad when he "gave" it to me w/o sufficient prior spousal consultation.
random thought: Keeping that old paint "spotless" (it would rub off on your thumb without much effort - yes, this is the PAINT i'm talking about) was a chore I attended to with great sense of purpose indeed.
My "inheritance" came with about 150,000 miles on it, and I swapped in a rebuilt (free
) motor - with mostly very ordinary tools and minimal assistance as I recall - and drove it for another 120,000 miles. Alas, despite my heart-felt efforts with sheet metal and rivets, it eventually rusted out from under itself and was laid to rest, with honors, just after it reached drinking age, in the late-80s.
I used to say my bus had driven round trip to the moon... Writing this, I STILL feel a kind of emotional "connection" to that old VW; I think my interest in a MINI is rooted there - MC owners really ARE attached to their MINIs. OMG on "prom night" with the middle (bench) seat removed... And then there was the time I drove it to the circus to collect a bus-load of (thoughtfully packaged mind you) elephant manure to compost for my chemical-free vegetable garden! Made the local papers 'n everything but whoa am I ever digressing!
However, if anyone cares to wax nostalgic over a couple Cokes, definitely email scottw@schwarz.com. I remember the '78 veewee van I picked up used after the '67 was gone, how i would brag about it's fuel-injected Porsche engine, lol, and THEN there was the "last of the line" (for me anyways) 1968 VW CAMPER (yes it had the kewwwl little windows along the roofline, not to mention a full length roofmounted cargo rack that was sturdier than the rest of the car!) and 1971 Super Beetle purchased as a set for about 800 bucks... They both ran for several (somewhat chilly in the Wintertime) years.
Proudly I say i NEVER owned a "Vanagon" teehee!
Once again Long-winded and off-topic, but Very Grateful Indeed,
Tatt

Normally I wouldn’t compare a MCS to a M3 (I had a 2003 MCS and currently own a 2004 M3) as they are two dissimilar cars in what I thought were two different price ranges. But when you start getting a MCS in the mid to upper $40K range it becomes comparable in the price range department. There is no getting around personal taste as far as looks and aesthetics and the differences in overall quality, but there is no getting around the differences in performance. On a twisty mountain road the MCS will hang with the M3 as the MCS has great handling but the M3 also has great handling plus plenty of power to giddy up and go when the road opens up.
